School Picture Day

Mommy forgot it was picture day to start off. I woke up grumpy. Mommy wouldn’t let me pick out my own clothes but I kept bugging her so so finally gave up. I wore my favorite red sweater. I love it so much and people always tell me it looks nice. We were walking to school, it takes so long! Then we saw the crossing guard and I said “have a nice day” to her. She smiled at me and said “enjoy picture day!” Then my mom stopped walking for a second and looked kinda funny like mad but also surprised. She told me she didn’t realize it was picture day and was upset that I was wearing old clothes. I didn’t really care much because I liked what I was wearing, that’s why I picked it out! Mom said it didn’t go with the background she asked for, whatever that means. Here is the proof of my picture, is it good or bad?

Mommy doesn’t like it so I will have to do it all over again. I sure hope she remembers the next time. (Side Note from Mommy: “I have marked it on every calandar I own, in hopes of making sure the retakes are fantastic! I always buy them so I won’t have a choice.”)

GUEST POST – Keeping kids fit

Today, we welcome Marci Warhaft-Nadler to the blog to discuss ways parents can introduce an active lifestyle to their children.

~~~
A lot of parents write to me asking for advice about how they can make sure their kids are getting enough exercise and the answer is a lot easier than they think: “Let them play!”
The truth is most kids like to play. Whether it’s kicking around a ball, rolling down grassy hills or jumping in puddles, kids usually have lots of energy and just need the freedom to let it loose. Different kids have different interests and it’s important to find out what activities your kids like to do and then encourage them to do it. It’s amazing how many programs are available these days for kids of all ages. Many community centers offer sports programs for even our youngest toddlers and joining a group like that could be a fun way to get new playtime activities while making new friends. As our kids grow up and start spending most of their days at their desks in school, it’s really important that we keep that sense of play alive and kicking. There are so many ways for moms, dads, brothers and sisters to stay active while having tons of fun!
1. Playground Obstacle courses:
My kids always loved these when they were younger and actually STILL love them as they get older!Just head out to your neighbourhood park and use whatever you see to make up silly obstacles for everyone to do. Get creative! Something like this for example: run around the swing set 3 times, do 2 jumping jacks, climb up the jungle gym, spin in circles two times, slide down the slide, run to the bench, step on top of it and yell out the name of your favourite fruit!
The best part is that while mom/dad are creating the courses, they’ll be getting exercise too!
Don’t forget to take turns creating the courses.
2. Take a hike!
Throw some snacks in a backpack, put on your walking or running shoes and explore new areas. You don’t even have to leave your neighbourhood! Sometimes local parks will have short trails you can follow or if you’re feeling really adventurous, look for age appropriate trails a little out of the way. For some reason, nothing tastes better than an outdoor picnic lunch during a family hike.
(Try adding a stroll to your after dinner routine. A nice walk after a healthy meal is a great way to keep the family fit, even if the walk is to the ice cream store for dessert!)
3. Throw a DJ Dance Party in your living room!
The kids pick the music while mom/dad play DJ.  The only rule is that EVERYBODY dances!
4. Think you can’t be active while watching TV? How about playing an energetic game of “I dare you to..”
How do you play? It’s easy. While you’re watching TV, instead of watching the commercials or flipping around the channels, dare each other to do silly things that get you out of your seats!
For example: “I dare you to hop around like a kangaroo!”
                             “I dare you to pretend you’re playing your favourite sport!”
                             “I dare you to do as many situps as you can until the program comes back !”
The possibilities are endless! Kids need to know that exercise isn’t something bad we do to our bodies because we don’t like them, but something great we do because we love and appreciate them. The more they can enjoy being physically active when they’re young, the more likely they’ll be to stay active as they get older.
Moms and dads: It’s very important that we instil a love and appreciation for fit, healthy bodies right from the beginning so that our kids will always make time for the physical well-being. The more kids can appreciate their bodies for what they can DO, the less focused they’ll be on how they LOOK.
Kids:  Feel free to remind your moms and dads how important and fun exercise can be. There are a lot of things that parents can get busy with and it can be easy for them to forget about playtime, but DON’T LET THEM. Parents need to be active too!
First Day Fashion Options
Since back to school is almost here I wanted to decide what to wear. I love fashion, but back to school fashion is even more exciting for me because it’s new! I have all kinds of really great things to wear. I could use your help! My mommy is going to post 3 pictures of outfits I really love. You get to vote for your favorite one and let me know which I should wear on my first day of school! Fun, right?!
The clothes came from Walmart, Old Navy and Target
So have a look and then my mom says you you can answer on the poll at the bottom of the post! We love feedback so if you have something extra to say you can find us on  Facebook or Twitter.
We really can’t wait to see which one you pick!
Thanks for visiting my blog and taking part in the poll!
Peanut Butter Cup Bundt Cake
My mom wanted to make a bundt cake because she had never made one before. She started off with a fresh strawberry lemon yogurt cake. It was really good but I like chocolate cake better. She promised the next one could be my pick. So when my time came I chose a peanut butter cup cake! She found it over on Whipped-the blog. I couldn’t wait to try it! Mommy wan’t in a rush so I had to bug her just enough times to make her say yes. It was a LOT of times! So we got baking!
Chocolate Peanut Butter Bundt Cake
1 box Duncan Hines Devil’s Food Cake mix
16 oz. sour cream
3 large eggs
20 mini peanut butter cups
For the glaze:
1/2 cup whole milk
1/4 cup smooth peanut butter
2 Tablespoons powdered sugar
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Put the cake mix, sour cream and eggs in a bowl and beat with electric mixer or stand mixer on medium until fully combined, about 3-4 minutes. Grease and flour a bundt pan. Put half the batter in the pan. Cut peanut butter cups in quarters and sprinkle them over the batter. Top with remaining batter. Cook at 350 degrees for 40-50 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean. Let cake stand in pan for 10 minutes. Turn it out on a rack to cool.
For the glaze: Heat milk in a sauce pan. Whisk peanut butter in to hot milk. Whisk in powdered sugar. Put cake on rack over a sheet pan (to catch extra glaze) Drizzle the glaze over the cake and serve right after glazing.
It is my favorite cake ever! Mommy let me eat some when it was still gooey and warm with a glass of cold milk. I made a terrible mess though. My face was so covered in cake that she had to wash it for me. You should make it for your kids unless peanuts are bad for you, then don’t make it. But it’s really really good!
If you make it let mommy and me know what you think of it!
Happy baking!
School Shopping
It’s time to go back to school. Well for me it’s time to START school. I’m so lucky. I get new clothes and stuff just because I’m going to “big school”! Mommy took me out and we went to the big mall. It was so much fun. We even had lunch out at New York Fries! I got these really cool surprise bags filled with beautiful accessories from Claire’s. Inside were beautiful hair clips, hair bands and lots of jewelry. (Moms note:  the junior version had 2 bags for $5.00 approx. 20 items, several of which were not age appropriate although they are geared more towards younger girls. A really fantastic purchase if you want some fun accessories.) I can’t wait to get another one!  We went to a lot of stores and it made me very tired but I was okay because I get to pick my own stuff. Mommy and I do not always like the same things but she still lets me pick things. I tried on lots of clothes and I got to buy a lot of it. Mommy said I can mix new stuff with old to make new outfits and then it’s not so much money. I think I want to go back for more but I’ll have to take my own piggy bank, mommy said her bank is now empty.
Wanna see a few of the things I got?
It was even more fun coming home and having a fashion show to show Daddy all my new things! He said I looked gorgeous. I think I do too, or maybe I look fancy.
How do you think I look?
Mommy wants to know: Have you started shopping for your kids yet? Try to remember to make it lighthearted and fun try on a few silly things to lessen the stress of B2S shopping with little ones!
DIY Socktopus
I don’t like being bored. I’m lucky because Mommy can usually come up with something to do. I saw cute octopus puppets made on a TV show, so mom said we could make some too. They were really easy to make, but I needed help with the cutting part for the legs or whatever they are called when they’re on an octopus. That part made me mad because I like to do it all by myself. These are fun to play with and even my kitty likes them. There weren’t many steps to making them but my favorite part was when I had to go outside and shake, shake , shake to get all the fuzzies off them.
Here is how we made them:
Start with a plastic shopping bag, a dollar store sock of your choice, and some ribbon or an elastic.
Bunch your bag into a ball then stuff it into the toe of the sock. Tie it off with your ribbon or elastic, then trim if necessary.
Trim the bottom 2″ or so of the sock to use as scraps.
Then cut the remaining into 8 tentacles
use the scraps to create your own funky looking eyes! We cut out circles of different colours and glued them together
Me- Gluing the eyes together
Isn’t he soooo cute?!
I just love them! Hope you can make some too! Oh yeah, my Mom told me to mention that this craft cost only $2.00 for two pairs of socks. We had everything else on hand. I’d love to see what your’s look like! Send me a message with your pictures!
Chick Flick With Mom
This morning I woke up grumpy. I didn’t feel grumpy but Mom said I was. She told me all the things we had to do today. All things I don’t like. Like cleaning everything. I was mad so I told her I didn’t want to help. Then Mommy said she didn’t want to do it either! Instead, she said maybe we could use some quiet mom and kid time. She asked me what I wanted to do instead of the work, and I said watch a movie.
We have Netflix on our TV now so I had lots I could pick! I had so many choices but Mom saw a movie that she said was from a book she read when she was a kid. It wasn’t a cartoon but it was a good movie. We watched Ramona and Beezus! There were really funny parts and one part that made me sad. Mom mentioned something about seeing “eye-candy“, whatever that means.
If you have a little girl too, you should definitely watch it. I know she’ll love it!
I think we both agreed it was a fun morning, now we are going to do all the work. Booo!
Squishy Baff
When mommy told me that she had something cool for my bath I expected a new bath toy or something. But no, she asked me if I want to have a bath in goo. Squishy Baff she called it. Umm… No. That’s gross. Then she showed me the box, and told me how it works. The box has these cute kids on it so I liked it. She ran me a bath (a shallow bath for best results) then I had to put in this bag of blue powder and swish the bath around. When that was done, I climbed into the tub and oh my goodness, it certainly was gooey. Like jello kinda, but not exactly. When bath time was over she gave me another badge of white powder to poor in and swish around. That made to goo turn back to regular water. It was like magic. Mommy was happy, knowing it wouldn’t clog up the drain (whatever that means…)
It comes in four colours, pink, green, red and blue (that’s what I got, but I would have rather had pink). Mommy bought it at Toys R’ Us. She found it a bit pricey but was happy you got two baths out of it. It was really strange, but in a good way. She said I could only do it once in a while for fun but not for every bath or she would be poor.
Here are some pictures of my Squishy Badge experience:
Yummy healthier treats
I’m always asking for snacks and here’s one of my favourites. No bake energy bites are really easy to make. Mommy measures out the ingredients and I do the rest.
No-Bake Energy Bites
*1 cup oatmeal
*1/2 cup peanut butter
*1/3 cup honey
*1 cup coconut flakes
*1/2 cup ground flaxseed
*1/2 cup mini chocolate chips
*1 tsp vanilla
Mix everything above in a medium bowl until thoroughly incorporated.
Let chill in the refrigerator for half an hour.
Once chilled, roll into balls and enjoy!
Big thanks to Smashed Carrots & Peas for this recipe! We all love it!
If you try them let me know what you think!
Getting Ready For Kindergarden
I’m starting “big school” really soon so my mommy has been getting me some cool school supplies. She bought me the best lunch kit ever from Winners, and it’s made by Smart Planet. It’s kinda squishy so it gets small, but pops out to make more room. My mommy got it early so I could practice with it. That way I wont have any trouble when I’m on my own at school! It was tough at first but I finally got the hang of it. It has lots of room for all kinds of goodies. Since I am little my lunch won’t fill the spaces so mommy bought some little containers that fit well inside if I need them. It can be used flat too! How cool is that?! I have a feeling we are going to like this lunch kit! The only downside was our Winners store didn’t have any of the other Smart Planet products so we’ll have to keep our eye out and buy them if we find them.
My lunch kit all “popped open”
It squishes flat so I can save room in my backpack!
All full of lunch and being tested out from backpack to belly!
Do your kids have a cool lunch kit? I’d love to know what kind they have!
